Swimsuit Time~

It's that time of the year again. Summer time when it gets hot and kids like to go swimming, which means that once again I have to wear a swimsuit and this is not my favorite thing to do. I mean, what woman...let me try again, what MOM likes to wear a swimsuit?

And when you have small children, it is not just modesty you have to worry about, but you have to stand in front of a mirror and bend, squat, and lean in unnatural ways to ensure that no body part will peek out to say hi. Because let's face it, when you have small children you do end up bending, squatting, and leaning in unusual ways. Either chasing a kid, saving them from going under water, or having them hold on to you for dear life!

Swimsuits, while there are some nice ones that cover what needs to be covered, most options fall into the "bikini" category. How, how did we go from little dresses to something that covers even less than underwear?

Maybe I am on to something, maybe I should start a new swimsuit company that targets moms. Then we can all wear cute little dresses that compliment our body and will for sure cover all the stretch marks and lose skin that quite frankly need to be covered. Okay, maybe you are not a mom that got any stretch marks after being pregnant, maybe you have a perfect body. But most of us do go through a body "transformation" after having children. Don't we? And really the last thing we want to do is go on and show most of our stretched skin, our wobbly parts, and our unflattering curves.

So I will venture to wear my tankini, that goes all the way to my waist and a cute little skirt. I don't care if someone calls it "old lady" because to some I might be old, after all I am 30 years old. I like it.

Ultimately, as a Christian, I believe that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit and how we dress them does matter. What I teach my girls about how to dress does matter.

But I want to hear your thoughts, because we all feel different about our swim wear.

  1. I love landsend swimsuits because you can get sporty, full coverage, tankini, bikini, boardshorts, swim skirts, etc and they all actually fit a woman's body. Even the bikini bottoms are "modest" because they actually cover your butt. All of it lol!

Even if you aren't a mom, most suits are too skimpy! There needs to be more options of cute suits for ladies who don't want to show off so much skin.

  5. I agree with what someone else said about Lands End. Their suits are cute and modest.

One of my biggest swim suit pet peaves is little girls dressed in bikinis. I firmly believe that little girls are not sex objects and shouldn't dress as such.

  6. Great post! The only comment I have is this: I'm two years older than you and I don't consider myself old yet, so you're not old yet either! :)

I was JUST going through this myself.

I ended up with two bikinis. I have not only the bending/squatting/twisting issue, but I'm also still a bit heavier than I was pre-pregnancy so I wanted to make sure I felt comfortable in that regard, too.

One of the bikinis has a skirt bottom, and the other is actually long length board shorts (think, men's swim trunks). I was nervous that it would look awful but it actually looks really cute and should stand up to the bending/squatting/twisting issue!

@Marnie K: My little girls wear bikinis because they have CP and it is next to impossible to take down a wet one piece for bathroom breaks. I try to find the most modest possible, tho!

  9. Land's End sells swim shorts. They are basically shorts with a swim suit bottom underneath. They definitely hide more flab than anything else I have found. They also sell "tunic" swim tops, so that there is no risk of the tankini riding up and showing any tummy skin. They're not cheap, but often go on sale, and you can sometimes find coupon codes online.

  10. I do not wear a swimsuit to catch anyones attention, but I want to "fit in" and wear something that is comfortable. So, that leaves me quite confused and yes, I do not want to show much when bending...nor do I want to show off the stretch marks.

What I"m left with is to not go swimming :(

  14. Alicia, I am short, and although I am small, my girls do comment on my stretch marks, flabbiness, and legs! Comments like, "mommy, your tummy is squishy just like play-doh!" have been said around here...yeah, that made me feel great!

  15. Having a little girl with CP, I understand the issues with wet suits. But I do think these are different circumstances. In general, little girls in bikinis are cute but I agree that we are "sexualizing" our children too early. Even shopping for clothes for little girls is a challenge!

  16. Sabrina, I agree, we are not old, but fine with me if "old" means being 30 and wearing a modest swimsuit!

  17. I was going to comment with Lands End, but I saw other people beat me to it. I also love that they have bra-cup ones, so if you need extra support, there is no concern at all. I have Lands End one piece and I wear swim shorts over it. I feel comfortable, which is what counts. I also don't think I stand out at all with this combo.
